Step By Step Spring Maintenance For Lawnmowers
With the spring growing season coming up, homeowners are getting their lawn care tools ready for action. Many lawnmowers will fail in the season without the proper preventative maintenance. Here's a few simple tips for getting your lawnmower ready for spring.
First, make sure that you work safely. Wear safety goggles and work gloves before doing any work on your mower. Remember, those blades are sharp, and any job involving machinery requires safety glasses.
You wouldn't work on a wiring project without disconnecting the electricity, so don't work on your lawnmower with its power source connected either. Remove the sparkplug wire before attempting any other maintenance.
If your mower has a pull cord, remove the pull cord cover and check the cord for any damage. Clean out the compartment that holds the cord so that it will be easier to pull. Replace the cover to the pull cord compartment.
Locate the air filter casing and remove the screw(s) holding it closed. Clean out the air filter compartment and change the air filter. A lawnmower works a lot like an automobile, and a dirty air filter can impair your engine's efficiency. Be sure to replace the screws after changing the air filter. While you're in automobile mode, use your mower's dipstick to check the oil level and add oil if necessary. You'll want to check the oil level from time to time throughout the season as well.
Next, remove the sparkplug and inspect. If there is any damage or wear, replace the sparkplug with a fresh one. The washer that holds the plug in place will need to be lubricated before reinsertion.
Turn over the mower and loosen the nut that holds the blade on. Remove the blade and clean the debris from the bottom of the mower with a brush or rag. Starting the new season with a sharp blade is a great idea, so take the blade to be sharpened at a local mower dealership. After sharpening, apply a few drops of oil into the hole that the bolt goes into and replace the blade. Turn the mower over carefully. Check the air vents on the housing for any clogs and use a rag to clean them out. This will ensure adequate air flow to the engine.
These simple steps should restore your mower to spring fresh working condition. Reconnect your lawnmower's spark plug wire and start your engines! You are now an expert in maintaining lawnmowers!
